‘Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is Gerry Austen reporting for Radio Carolina from Italy in Europe. I’m here on the outskirts of the city of Pisa, in Tuscany, on this sunny morning. The country’s President has just cut the tape and the famous tower is again open to the public. It’s been closed for eleven years during which time 27 million dollars have been spent on fortifying it. Having removed the bells, the tower was secured with cables and one thousand three hundred and forty two cubic feet of soil was removed. And after all that … it’s still leaning!’
