Tiddles

 Roger Noons

The cage is empty. Joey’s blue-tinged down lies at the cat’s feet. A rough pink tongue laps fur; whiskers twitch.
    ‘Hello Boss,’ Tiddles squawks.
    ‘Oh no!’
Mary will kill me, the budgie was her fortieth birthday present, along with a brand new cage.
I grab for the cat’s tail, but she is too quick for me. Heading for the flap, she probably believes she can fly.
