The World On Loan

Dawn Knox

a stiff gin and tonic (for the librarian)

The librarian looked in horror as the woman returned a broken, torn book.

‘Pages are missing,’ he said indignantly.

The woman smiled. ‘Don’t worry, they came out after I’d read the book, so I know what happens.’

‘I’m going to have to charge you for the damage,’ the librarian said.

The woman shrugged.

In the future, will the owner of the world—God, your interpretation of God or perhaps our descendants—look at the broken, torn environment and point out the damage we caused.

Will we shrug and reply, “Don’t worry, we used up what we wanted of the world.”?
