I’d boarded the boy’s raft because it looked sturdy and I wanted to cross the lagoon.
Kneeling on the boards that were bound with thin blue rope, I felt my balance shift. Water seeped through my trousers. I toppled. For a scary moment, I was submerged in sea water and didn’t know which way was up.
The boy was unconcerned when I gasped through the surface. ‘You getting back on?’
The raft was sturdy, but I wasn’t – merely an old man who should be in a home. However, aside from my dignity, there was nothing much to lose.
‘Very well.’
