The final exam. Madame Clara sighed as she surveyed her class. The Fairy Godmothers’ Academy of Romance did not tolerate failure.
Desperate, royal parents paid her good money to teach their sons how to find a fairy-tale ending. In days of yore, princes had simply kissed a princess without a by your leave and she’d melt into his arms.
But that was then.
Now princesses and, indeed princes, wished to be wooed and won over. But many princes were clueless. This cohort of highnesses had achieved all-time lowness.
She inspected their exam submissions. A red rose, a poem declaring the prince’s undying love and an item of the prince’s choosing for the girl who had everything.
The roses were faded, damaged and in some instances dead.
Perhaps the poems would redeem them.
The first was familiar.
“Plagiarism!” She slammed it on the desk and the prince winced.
“Smut!” She dropped the next in the bin. She didn’t want his parents thinking he’d learned that sort of malarky at her academy.
The other poems were similarly disappointing, and as for the gifts… A crocheted cover to go over the spare toilet roll hadn’t been what she’d had in mind.
She couldn’t fail them all. What would the parents say? Perhaps with lenient marking…? Well, Ruprecht had a charming smile and Thorsten was a loveable clown. They’d definitely find princesses.
Jeffrey and Donald only had eyes for each other. No princesses were required there.
Perhaps my work is done, she thought.
