Sunday Serial: 240 x 70, 28. Sight restored 27 January 2019, by Gill James, clear water

Introduction

This collection is a collection of seventy stories, each 240 words. They were inspired by the first picture seen on my Twitter feed on a given day.

28.  Sight restored 27 January 2019

They'd all told him he was mad.

"Just get some new varifocals," said his father.

"What if I t doesn't work and you've spent all that money?" said his wife.

"Dad, you'll look crazy without your specs," his fifteen-year-old son said.

Well he was here now. It was a swanky place, actually. Thick carpets and sofas you sank into. Piping hot coffee and nice biscuits on the go. He was dressed smartly enough but he guessed the other patients clothes didn't come off the peg.

He didn't have to wait too long. Soon he was in the luxurious treatment room. His chin was held in place with a rest and a band across his forehead and struts at the side of his face stopped his head moving. The white purple-rimmed light came at him.

"Just creating the flap now," murmured the surgeon. "Good, and now the other eye."

The light came again.

It was painless though puzzling. Would it work though?  He'd read about possible side effects. Seeing halos. Not being able to drive at night. Fluctuating vision.

"All done. You'll need to use these drops as your eyes will be dry for a while. I'll see you in two days time and then again in six months. But it's all looking good at the moment."

Later he noticed the brightness of the flowers in his garden. He admired his daughter in her prom dress. He fetched her back later when she and her boyfriend had a massive row. There was no problem with driving in the dark. He didn't even have trouble with the promised dry eyes.

"So worth it," he told his wife. "I can see clearly now."
